African headwrap

Today I've learnt something - the african headwrap, that is common in countries like Nigeria, is called gele. And if you read my blog earlier you know I love this beautiful traditional vibeful roots style! :) And here's a clip how to tie your gele! I know, Im not goin to try myself, but I love looking at this clip! lol

Is that a scarf or paper because it sounds like paper and is stiff like it also.

Hi! I've been checking your blog out for a while.

I remember when my mom tried to put tie one of those head wraps for a wedding we were going to. She was freaking out because she couldn't tie it properly.

And no anonymous, its not paper...thats just the material.

Of course the material she is using for her headscarf is stiff - if it were soft it would flop and would not hold any shape. Just like the hats of our western world - those are always made out of material that is stiff enough to hold its shape or it is stiffened afterwards to hold its shape.

It was wonderful to watch her create her own hat that she can change every day using the same material instead of having to buy lots of different hats - so enterprising and creative. I love it! Thanks for giving us this video.

Well that was different. I always thought that those were hats of sorts not scarves used as hats. That is very creative, indeed.

Yes, the gele is made from a stiff material....it's def. not paper. Another advantage of the stiffness is that it lasts for a good while so you can use that piece a few times.
Old ones usually become too soft and then you cant tie them.
