NYC is a great city! I lived there for a year before moving to London. If the weather is nice, Central Park is lovely in the Spring. The Empire State Building offers a great view of NYC, especially at night. Visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are a must. And there are tons of great museums in NYC. The theatre, music and comedy scene in NYC are all awesome. The decor of Grand Central Station is beautiful and I think they offer tours. Time Square is cool, especially with all the lights on at night...and see if you can catch a glimpse of the Naked Cowboy. And if you get a chance head up to Harlem...125th Street has loads of stores, great restaurants and beautiful black women :-D. Also, if you want to get a free view of the NYC harbor, you can take the Staten Island ferry for free from Lower Manhattan. The food in NYC is awesome...you can find any cuisine there! Not sure how long you'll be there, but if you want a little break from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, check out Coney Island and take a stroll on the beach. It's just a subway ride away! Enjoy your trip!

It seems to me you wouldn't be interested in the touristy stuff. Skip WTC, Empire State Building [Do 30 Rock instead if you want a view], and Ellis Island. Go to Flatbush, in Brooklyn which is a mainly West Indian Neighborohood, and eat som Jamaican Food. Check out Fort Green, and Down town Brooklyn. I'd also visit Harlem: 125th street, and get some Soul food at Sylvia's, and 116th street on the east side for African.
Go to Bellmont lounge on Sunday evening. The best place in the city for reggae. I think you'l find what you're looking for. Have fun!
